CANCER WELLFIT PROGRAM
SBAC's Program History The SBAC program started in 1994. Over the past five years over 200 cancer survivors have enrolled in our supervised exercise program. The basic instructional format for the program is as follows:
The SBAC Program is run two times per week including: Progressive resistance strength training Specialty strength training Group exercise and one on one training Mind/body conditioning Aquatic therapy Movement therapy (Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi)
Some of the results you can expect: Out of the responses we obtained from cancer patients, more than 66% believe that attending a supervised exercise program is a form of support network. The reasons for this are easy to see:
Patients can participate in a program with other patients The program is structured and supportive of their recovery process. Although in a class format, the exercise protocols are individualized for each participant.Patients receive benefits of a support program (sense of belonging, help through a difficult period, assigned a task and goal setting, working through discomfort, etc). similar to the effects of group therapy (sharing thoughts on cancer, recovery process, feelings of hope and a sense of belonging). The Cancer Well-fit Program is a free service for all participants.
